Criminal Defence

Your charge is not the whole story.

Criminal proceedings affect liberty, family, work and reputation. We take a careful approach to the allegations and disclosure, explain the available steps and develop a defence strategy suited to the evidence and the client's circumstances.

Bail hearings & release conditions

A release hearing requires attention to the allegations, the legal issues and a workable plan addressing the concerns before the court. We assess the available information, help prepare the proposed release arrangements and make submissions where retained. Questions about an existing release condition require a separate assessment; do not assume that a condition can simply be ignored.

How we help

  • Preparation for a bail hearing
  • Review of proposed release arrangements
  • Assessment of applications relating to conditions

Assault & domestic-related allegations

Assault allegations need a close review of the evidence and the circumstances of the alleged event. We examine disclosure, identify disputed issues and explain the procedural options. Where allegations involve a domestic relationship, we also discuss the practical effect of release conditions and the boundaries of the criminal-law engagement.

How we help

  • Disclosure and allegation review
  • Advice about criminal process and conditions
  • Resolution discussions or trial preparation as appropriate

Impaired driving & related charges

Driving-related criminal charges can involve technical evidence, police procedure and significant personal consequences. We examine the charge, disclosure and relevant circumstances, and explain the steps available within the criminal proceeding. Any separate provincial licence or administrative process must be identified and addressed under an appropriate mandate.

How we help

  • Charge and disclosure assessment
  • Review of investigation and testing evidence
  • Preparation for court and available resolution options

Drug charges

Drug allegations vary in their legal and evidentiary issues. We review the disclosure, circumstances of the investigation and the specific allegation before discussing the defence strategy. Where relevant, the assessment includes questions about searches, possession, identification and other evidence on which the prosecution relies.

How we help

  • Assessment of the alleged offence and evidence
  • Review of investigation-related issues
  • Court representation within the agreed scope

Firearm & weapons offences

Firearm and weapons allegations require careful attention to the precise charge, the item involved and the evidence linking a person to it. We review the disclosure and relevant circumstances, explain the issues and prepare for the appropriate court steps. Advice is tailored to the alleged offence rather than assumptions based on its label.

How we help

  • Charge-specific disclosure review
  • Assessment of possession and investigation evidence
  • Defence preparation and court submissions
04 / 06

Theft, fraud & property offences

Property and fraud allegations often depend on documents, communications, financial records or identification evidence. We help clients understand the case alleged against them, identify information needed for an informed response and evaluate the available procedural options. Any related civil dispute is a separate matter unless expressly included in the engagement.

How we help

  • Review of documentary and other disclosure
  • Assessment of the prosecution's allegations
  • Resolution discussions and defence preparation
04 / 07

Uttering threats & related allegations

The context, wording and reliability of evidence can be important in a threats-related case. We review communications, witness accounts and the surrounding circumstances disclosed in the file. We also explain relevant court obligations and work with the client on the next steps in the criminal proceeding.

How we help

  • Review of messages and witness evidence
  • Advice on court obligations and restrictions
  • Preparation of the defence position
04 / 08

Breaches, court appearances, trials & sentencing

Missed appearances or alleged breaches of court orders can create separate legal issues. We assess those allegations and assist with the relevant court process. Across criminal matters, the engagement may cover disclosure review, appearances, Crown discussions, trial preparation, trial representation or sentencing submissions, depending on the scope agreed.

How we help

  • Non-trial appearances and Crown discussions
  • Trial assessment, preparation and representation
  • Sentencing submissions and related advice

What to prepare.

  • The charge document and any court or release paperwork.
  • Upcoming appearance dates and the court location.
  • Disclosure already received, kept unchanged.
  • Your immigration status if it may be relevant to advice.

Keep sensitive information for the appropriate intake process. The initial enquiry form is not for evidence or document uploads.

Important: For an imminent court date or release issue, telephone the office. This website is not an emergency response service. Do not assume that counsel is appearing or managing a deadline until the engagement is confirmed.

Common questions.

Does the initial consultation include a trial?

Not automatically. The scope and fees are discussed for your particular matter. Trial preparation, trial representation, appeals or separate proceedings may need a distinct agreement.

Can a criminal matter affect immigration status?

It may. Tell counsel about your immigration status so that any potential interaction can be assessed. Criminal and immigration proceedings may require separate but coordinated advice.

Can I ignore a condition while asking to change it?

Do not treat an enquiry or a request for advice as permission to disregard a court order. Ask for advice about your actual paperwork and the applicable procedure.
